Really bad. Zero flavor. There's very little cooking going on here - it all comes out of a can that resided on the bottom shelf somewhere. There is no reason to go here. Even if you've never tried to before, you can make better fajitas at home yourself. I'm not kidding. Also, they have only sangria - no real wine. Best avoided unless there are no other options. But there are, which brings me back to this - avoid.

Never again. Planned on dinner at Cafe Granada but they were closed. Figured we would give panchitas a try. It's Mexican. How bad could it be? Bad! Really bad! I think I've had been Mexican food at Taco Bell. Had the enchiladas that were in a deep pool of flavorless green sauce. Gross! Both salsas were watery and the chips were stale. There are much better Mexican places around. Skip panchitas.

I love this place. The ambiance, maybe a tad too casual? Shabby chic Mexi decor. The service is ALWAYS fast and friendly. Prices are great. I love their food. I have never had a bad dish. This isn't Tex-Mex, Mexi-fusion, or any hipster avant-guard spin. This is just good. Plain. Mexican food. It's not all doctored up, and isn't chipotled to death. It's just good.

First of all, disclosure here: I am a vegetarian, so a lot of the menu items were off limits to me. Let's begin with the positive: love the location, right on Carrollton so I could watch the streetcars roll by. Other than that not much else positive, except the complimentary chips and salsa, neither of which were a hit with me but it was nice to have them. I ended up going with the veggie burrito, no beans as they were cooked with lard. It had about a tablespoon of guacamole, fajita bell peppers and onions, shredded cheese and white rice. Yes, plain white rice. This to me was the biggest disappointment. The veggies were nice but the burrito overall lacked flavor. I dumped the remaining salsas into it but it only helped a little bit. If I go back again it would sadly be only for the location. It looked like a nice mix of tourists and locals so the non-veg menu items must be good.

While this doesn't necessarily say much, Panchita's is far and away the best Mexican food in New Orleans. I love the huevos con chorizo, and the tamales are very good, too. Look, if you want a chicken quesadilla, maybe this isn't the place for you. But if you're willing to be just a tiny bit more adventurous, and look beyond the bean burrito, a lot of the menu is very good. Beware the margaritas, though. They're from a mix, and not a very good one. Stick with a cold cerveza.

The food was great but the service was horrible. When we said we need another minute before we ordered she gave us sort of a rude glare and walked away. Also the chips were stale and I wish they had more of a mild salsa. When I went to ask for a side of queso she said there were two different types and acted agitated that I didn't instantly know the difference. Not once did she come over to refill our water and when she asked us how the food was, she did so in a disgruntled voice. I'd love to go back again for the food but only if they hire better staff.

I like Mexican food, both Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican. This place falls into the authentic Mexican category. I was really hoping to give Panchita's a 4 star review as it is around the corner from my house, but alas it is not to be! The Decor- The place is tiny and casual with carved wood chairs and colorful accents. It appears clean, though it is more of a stop in casual place than a take a date to type of place. The Food- As noted by many others, free chips and 2 colors of salsa are served upon sitting, which is pretty standard for traditional Mexican. The chips were really tasteless and I actually added some salt in hopes of spicing things up a bit. The salsas were also tasteless and had no heat to them at all. Also too watery with very little tomato or onion. I hate to say this but the Salsa bar at the chain Moe's serves much better salsa. For dinner my partner had a chicken Quesadilla ($9) and I had Chicken Enchiladas ($11.00) with Mole sauce. My meal was fine. The sauce was not the best or worst I have ever had, though it really needed more spice- and I say this as a person who can only eat Medium spiciness at the most. There were 3 Enchiladas covered well with the sauce with a drizzle of sour cream and a sprinkle of cheese on top. This came with refried black beans and a small amount of rice. The chicken was dry, though the sauce as mentioned was pretty tasty. The beans were also creamy and good, the rice was kind of hard and was flavorless. My partner had a Chicken Quesadilla as mentioned. His meal was awful. So awful that I had to stop myself giving this place a 1 star review. His meal was literally 3 slices of wheat tortilla with about 1/4" of chicken/cheese filling. There were no rice or beans served with this. For $9! When he finished 10 minutes before I did, I could tell he was still hungry because he was picking at the chips and he never does that. Once again, we have to give this place the Texas Roadhouse test- $9 at the Roadhouse gets you 2 basketfulls of warm cinnamon rolls, an awesome house or Cesear salad, a huge 8ish oz piece of chicken, and a big baked potato with all the fixins. $9 at Panchita's gets you 3 small slices of Quesadilla with a little bit of dry chicken and not even any salsa on top. No thank you Panchita's, although you are around the corner from the house, we will not be wasting our hard earned cash on you again!

This was by far...the WORST Mexican food I have every had and I've had Mexican food all over the U.S, Mexico, and England. I had the Caritas de Puerco and It looked disgusting and tasted exactly the same. The price was expensive for lunch, under seasoned, and flat out bland. Apparently, people in Nola don't know a thing about Mexican food because if you did you would never give this place, more than one star. This restaurant has Mexican cooks and mexican servers; one would think that they would know good, authentic, more appealing looking Mexican food. However, Nola isn't Los Angeles or Mexico were the food is consistently amazing. I am VERY disappointed! The only reason why I gave this restaurant a one star is because I had to give them something in order to write this review and the Verde salsa was ok. I will never come back here again!

FYI: when I came here the Yelp Attribute that asked if they served alcohol was wrong. Maybe it's been changed, but they DO serve alcohol - beer, wine, and margaritas with tequila. They have particularly good Sangria, some of the best I've tasted, but there is no bar that you can go and sit at. I'm still on my quest to find a Mexican restaurant in NOLA that's anywhere near as good as the dozens of truly great ones I would frequent when I lived in Houston. This one got off to a good start - they brought red AND green salsa to the table with the chips! I've never seen this outside of Texas! The red sauce was excellent. The restaurant is very small but very bright and had different telenovelas (on mute) playing on each of the 2 TV's. The menu is only a couple of pages but includes all of the Mexican staples. I ordered an enchilada but asked to substitute fajita beef for ground beef (this was NOT listed as an option on the menu so I wouldn't have been upset if they had said no). The waitress only spoke limited English and this seemed to confuse her, which in turn confused me because this was something I would request all the time in Texas and it was never an issue, even for wait staff who didn't speak English. I'm not complaining, as it wasn't on their menu so I had no right to assume anything. I'm just curious. Anyway, we got on the same page and they accommodated me in my request. The food was very good; the portions were large and my cheese enchiladas were flavored very well and were heaping with ooey gooey cheese, which I love. They also came with black beans, another favorite. I really don't have anything to complain about but I don't see myself coming back here for supper. The tiny size of the restaurant, the short menu, the really brightness of the place and the fact that parking was a pain (on-street) makes it more of a place I'd stop at for lunch if I was in the neighborhood. The food and service were great, the Sangria was excellent, and the fact that they had red and green salsa was impressive. I'd say definitely give it a try if you're a Mexican food junkie like me and jonesing for a fix, but if you're already not a fan of this cuisine, this place won't convert you.

Absolutely horrible. The fajitas were flavorless, and the tamales tasted like vegetable oil. The salsa was pure liquid but tasted ok, and the chips were flavorless just like everything else. Before going we had read a bad review but went anyway, it was a awful mistake

I have gone to this restaurant several times....not so much because I want to keep coming back but because I have friends who are big fans of their free chips and salsa. The food here is average in my opinion. There are definitely better mexican restaurants in NOLA. The atmosphere is pretty fun though. You have TV playing mexican soaps, which like Indian soaps are rather melodramatic and have pretty bad cinematography but highly entertaining nonetheless, even if you don't speak spanish. The dishes the food are served in are pretty native-looking too, which adds to the ambiance of the place. Fun place to hang out with your friends but if want good mexican food too, then I'd say keep looking....I personally think better tacos are to be had at Taqueria Corona on Magazine street.

I'm from Denver, where there's halfway decent Mexican food on every corner. Upon moving to NOLA, my hopes weren't high that I would find a good Mexican joint. Behold Panchitas!! Very respectable authentic Mexican food, just like myexivan father-in-law makes. Terrific salsas and guacamole, good homemade chips. I had the Camarones Diabla, where were very tasty. The margaritas are a bit weak, but the food more than makes up for that.

This is my favorite place for Mexican food in New Orleans! I ate there constantly when I lived there and make sure to stop in every time I visit. Their margaritas are on point and my new favorite is the Tres Leches cake made with tequila. It's UNREAL. You won't be disappointed! Also, the green salsa they bring out with chips is amazing!

It's been a very long time since I've written a review but let me tell you what, Panchita's is what cured my writers block. I've eaten at this restaurant an absurd amount of times since I first tried it. Every single dish I've had from here is absolutely spectacular and the price is very right. The barbocoa is the best I've ever had and I found it funny that the waiter asked me if I "was sure" I wanted to order it. Lol. Everyone knows the cheek is the best part to eat! All the "staples" (and I mean that in the American sense) are perfect and not overly salted or greasy. Perhaps my favorite menu item are the flautas. These are hands down the best flautas I've had outside of Mexico (to which I traveled many times before you needed a passport. Dang bureaucrats). But seriously, try them for yourself. But let me tell you the REAL reason why I've been eating Panchita's 2-3 times weekly for the past couple of months. The salsa. That's right, the BEST SALSA IN NEW ORLEANS. Free red and green salsa with every order. The green salsa isn't your typical tomatillo or salsa verde but instead seems to be a heavy cilantro and onion type blend. I'm sure it's not for everyone but luckily I'm not everyone. Both red and green salsa are made fresh and it really shows when you take a bite. As far as I'm concerned this is the only Latin place in town worth going to.

This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant in New Orleans...I have passed by so many times, and never managed to go in. Well, I'm glad I did. First, the free chips and salsa are amazing (why doesn't everyone do that??) There is a homemade green and red..So fresh and yummy, lots of cilantro - love it! If it's your first time heading over - try the sampler platter, it's big enough for two and you get to try a little bit of everything. After going back several times - I have fallen head over heels for their empanadas. I like to try out their different homemade sauces too, and last time they brought out the chipotle sauce for a topper. Delish! Be sure to order a big old Mexican Coke to compliment your meal. Not sure why they taste better than the American version, but they do. Hats off to Panchita's!

I'm trying to get more in the habit of giving reviews. Especially since moving to NOLA. This is one of the few Mexican food places I've tried since moving from Arizona. I can't say it was the best Mexican food I've had but it definitely was one of the better in NOLA that I've had so far. I had the steak burrito. Over all I thought it was a little on the bland side but once hot sauce was added it was more tasty. Serve was very friendly but a little on the slow side. After the meal the girlfriend and I had Flan for dessert which was covered in whipped cream and scribbled with Hershey's chocolate syrup. It was tasty but the Flan was a little on the dry side. I think if you caught them with freshly made flan it would be on my highly recommend desserts.

I'm always on the search for good, semi-authentic and inexpensive Mexican food. This place came close on 2 out of three of those points. The atmosphere is very "bare bones". It's basically just a little Mexican diner with "family" style seating in one large, brightly lit room. They have a wide variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner choices, which include your basic Mexican faire of burritos, tacos, flautas, etc. The chips and salsa are complimentary, but the chips aren't served warm (I don't know why they couldn't pop them in a hot oven for 3 or 4 minutes) and the salsas were really watery. I decided to get a burrito with pork. It was really big, but it was also really greasy. I don't know if that's just because the pork was greasy, but the tortilla was so soaked with grease, that it was falling apart. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best I've ever had, either and honestly, I didn't finish it because it was so greasy. The person I was with had three tacos with black beans and rice. That looked really good, and if I go back, I think I'll try that. I would probably go back for lunch or something, but I doubt I would make this a dinner destination, again.

This place is pretty decent, and they don't frown at me when I ask for extra tequila in my margarita. The seats are kind of uncomfortable, but the service is quick and they have a patio.

The place is a hole in the wall. We ordered sangria and it had rotten fruit in it. Food was flavorless and it tasted like out of a can. I'm surprised they are still open.

The worst Mexican food In NOLA. Tasteless, bland cheese and dry tamales. Avoid this place.

  • Kent W.

I'd heard good things about this place, and was disappointed. It wasn't bad, just not anything special. The nachos had a yellow Velveeta-y cheese sauce, which I did not expect. I don't really have a problem with Velveeta cheese sauce, but I certainly did not expect it here. The whole plate was as big as my head, way too much for one to eat.

Panchitas is the love of my life. Not only because it is 2 blocks from my house. I spent many a summer of my childhood in central Mexico and falling in love with Mexican cuisine, which varies just as much from city to city in Mexico as pizza does in the USA. So that being said, finding a Mexican restaurant in New Orleans that cooks Mexican food the way I love it, is a challenge. But Panchitas is great! Order the jarocha with chicken! The base of it is always freshly made so it takes a wee bit longer than the tacos or burritos, but i still get my food only like 2 minutes after my friends get their tacos. The margaritas are magical! The green salsa is the best! You cannot go wrong with a burrito either... I will tell you that their mole sauce is very distinctive. I actually really don't care for it, so I will warn you to order it only if you're up for a taste adventure, hey maybe you'll love it! My only other disappoint is the horchata. I always find it to be too watery. Panchitas is cheap, delicious, fast and always great! Don't come here if you want some kind of Tex-Mex crap covered in cheese, that's what Nacho Mama's is for. Come here if you want authentic food that is inexpensive and yummy.

ok food + dirty dish + cheap prices = I would go back if I hadn't eaten off of a dirty dish My boyfriend had wanted to take me here for awhile because he really liked the prices and the food. I am currently on a Americanized Mexican food kick so I said why not. I give them props for the free chips and salsa but if you read the fine print you only get one order of these free and the refill costs you two bucks. The salsa was good and fresh and the chips were crispy so no complaints there. As a vegetarian there weren't many options on the menu and I can't cheat on my fav burrito (Felipe's) so I got a quesadilla with veggies. It was ok but not anything spectacular. I was half way through my meal when I took a closer look at the dish holding my guacamole.... looked like old stuck on salsa. GROSS. If it weren't for that one dish I would have given this place four stars. The food is good and cheap and the location can't be beat. But that dish sealed the deal and I just can't see myself coming back again.

If I could give no stars I would. Such bad Mexican food. Margaritas came from a box and queso was so bad we sent back. Do not judge New Orleans Mexican off this, it's HORRIBLE. Only good thing is location. HORRIBLE FOOD.

I'm here about once a week, and I can say I have never had a bad food experience. For brunch, try the "papas con chorizo". Delicious! My favorite dinner dish is "bistec a la mexicana" -- MMMMM! When you arrive, you get complimentary chips and 2 salsas (red and green). There's a wide selection of beer and Mexican coke. The tortillas are a mix between flour and corn...very unique and pretty tasty. Try it! You won't be disappointed. Downfall: Be prepared to wait awhile for your check when you're done eating. Also, no split checks. Patio is great -- right on the Carrollton street car line!

It is a nice-looking and decently decorated Mexican restaurant. There is pleasant outside seating, right on the sidewalk. The appetizer chips had two delicious sauces with it. My entree ($9.00) was the Jalapenos Chili Relleno (beef), with sides of rice, refried beans, and a bit of salad. The main problem was not the flavor, which was delicious all around, but the tiny portions. One just doesn't get much, here. So, if you love delicious food and am satisfied with just a little bit of it, this is a place for you. RJT

the service was terrible. i think we waited 20 minutes after our food was done just to get our checks, and waited 20 minutes before somebody even took our drink order. The food was good, and the fresh fruit juice was delicious. I had the Ceviche de Tostada and the Watermelon juice and it was excellent. If you don't mind horrible service you should check them out.

People have to understand that Mexico is a big, diverse country. Every region has its own cuisine- like every other country. Get that standard "Mexican" food "Tex-Mex" crapola outta your head. Panchita's is Mexican food, but from Veracruz. What the hell does that mean? 1) food is not very spicy 2) you'll see seafood on the menu 3) lots of tropical fruits 4) more black beans. Look at it on the map, and you'll understand that there is some influence of Caribbean staples around. "Oh, but isn't Cuban food spicy?" NO IT'S NOT! I have to agree, people who easily diss Panchita's don't really understand the variety of Mexican foods, or just food in general. There's a lot of variety in the menu. You're also given free salsa and chips. FYI they have Cola-Cola from Mexico, which is awesome, because there they make it with actual sugar cane. Lots of different juices, soft drinks from Mexico. Don't understand what you're reading in the menu? Staff is very friendly and will take their time to explain things to you. Food is made very quickly. I live down on S. Carrollton, so I'm here a lot. Never really had bad food. Not once. Cheap prices, too. For those that are more diverse, or with an open mind, I suggest you at least try Panchita's once.

I just moved to New Orleans from San Francisco and live about three blocks from this place, so I decided to give it a shot - as I love Mexican food and it was rather prevalent where I just came from. The cheap aspect caught my eye. I keep hearing how San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the country, so low prices sounded like just what the doctor ordered. Long story short, I ordered an al pastor burrito and a Pacifico. It cost over $13! That is unbelievable. Even in California, Mexican food is massively cheaper than that, and enough food for two meals. And hey, it wasn't even that good - not horrible, just boring, bland, and the burrito was pretty small. Service was friendly and quick, and the place was clean. But do not be deceived, it's neither cheap nor amazing.

I've been here several times, mostly when I have a craving for Mexican food within walking distance from my house. I have had mostly positive experiences. I love their green salsa. I usually steal the little bowl of it all for myself. The chips and salsa are complimentary, a rare commodity in New Orleans (Why is that, by the way? Free chips abound in Houston.). Everything is fresh and tastes pretty good. I've had their quesadilla with guacamole, burrito (which was huge!), and something I had never had before - the jarocha, which is a thick tortilla topped with beans, onions, meat, etc. Very different and very tasty. They're a little less than generous with their beans and rice. I would not recommend their "queso." It's lumpy and not too tasty. I'm thinking queso may not be a traditional Mexican food, and this place is very traditional. Tips: If it's nice out, sit outside -- Carrollton is great for people watching. If you want a special non-alcoholic drink, get a Mexican Coke!

This place was amazing! My friends and I were looking for a Mexican place to eat. I've probably passed this place many times and never stopped. I am so glad we finally stopped and went in to eat. It was wonderful. I ordered the chicken tostadas and they were amazing. Everyone should go to this place!!! It is sooooooo yummy.

Panchita's just recently opened bringing Mexican Criolla cuisine to the carrollton area. We showed up on what turned out to be their first day open. As such, things there were still very hectic. The food took over an hour to arrive and about half of it was cold (the restaurant was freezing though, it said 58 degrees). Ignoring the temp, the food we ordered was good, I think we enjoyed the chicken rolled tacos the most. They also mixed up our order and several other patrons had their food switched. I think I will return after they have had a chance to get on their feet and work out all of the kinks. They ran out of tortillas and offered us anything on the house, you could tell they felt really bad about how the first day was going. They do seem promising, I think they just need a little time. The prices were cheap ($6-9/plate), but I do wish they gave you more food. Even with the extra food they gave, four of us left still a little hungry.

We brought the boys and my mother-in-law to Panchita's for dinner. I had the combination platter with a carnitas Mexican tamal, a chicken mole enchilda, and a little entomatada. I am not a huge mole fan but the tamale and entomatada were outstanding. Full of flavor and perfectly textured. My son and mother-in-law had very tasty quesadillas. The chicken tasted flame-grilled and the shrimp were large and perfectly cooked. My wife enjoyed a full order of the chicken mole enchiladas. And Isaiah was well pleased with his chicken nuggets and fresh cut fries. The staff were attentive but not overbearing and our bill with beers and mango juice was $63. We'll definitely be back.

I will keep this review small and sweet, I would have given them 4 stars but the chips were not good at all, hard and bland maybe even a little stale but hey they are FREE right!?!? I told my friend I sure hope the rest of the food is not like this. I will say that the salsa that comes with the chips is VERY GOOD; they give you the basic red one and the green tomatillo one, which is the one I prefer. Now let's get to the food... I ordered the sampler and my friend ordered the fajitas which I found a bit pricey for a lunch item. For my sampler, I chose a tostada, tamale and a fried jalapeño pepper stuffed with beef, this plate also comes with white rice and black beans. All I can say is thank God that the food did not taste like the chips. The tamale cornmeal on the tamale was perfect and the tostada was delicious and the fried stuffed pepper well let's just say that I was wanted to order another one. I was very happy with the food. My friend enjoyed her fajitas, very tasty but just a lil pricey for a lunch portion and just let you know they charge $2.00 for refills which I thought was a bit too much. If I could suggest something to the PANCHITA crew it would be to get fresh made chips!!!

Stopped here with a friend for a quick lunch. I had a grilled chicken burrito which was ok- nothing spectacular at all. He had soft tacos with shrimp- the shrimp were tiny (think bait shrimp) and not at all plentiful. With so many great mexican restaurants in New Orleans, I won't be going back. I think El Gato Negro in particular has spoiled me.

Sloppy, soggy, fried "food". And we tried the complete sampler. Not a single item reminds me anything whatever remotely Mexican.

This is my favorite Mexican Restaurant in New Orleans. It's about a 6-block walk from my house and I probably average being there about once per week -- some weeks it seems like 2 or 3 times. I don't eat meat and Panchita's has some excellent choices for that palette. The vegetarian burrito is the bomb diggety -- big and flavorful. The fish is my favorite taco, although the shrimp is good, too. The fish seems to have a more intense flavor. They always have great fresh ingredients -- pico de gallo and either guacamole or just a slice of avocado. The shrimp fajitas were OK, but would not be my first choice. One of the things that I like is that the food preparation is always slightly different on each visit. You don't know if you will start off with one, two, or even four different salsas with the chips. I don't know f'r sure, but my guess it that they are all house made. The tacos might come with guacamole or just with fresh avocado -- always a little surprise. Sometimes I will just go over for the Fiesta Queso and margaritas. I really like the margaritas -- probably my second favorite in the city after Santa Fe. It's odd, because I know that they are made from a mix, which I don't like. Usually I prefer margaritas with no extra anything. Panchita showed me the secret. The mix directions calls for a 1-to-1 combination of tequila and the mix. Panchita does 2-to-1! More tequila -- is good!

I had a craving for Flautas last night and didn't feel like driving out to Superior. And why should I when I'm lucky enough to have another Mexican restaurant option, Panchitas, right around the corner in my 'hood?! The Flautas meal comes with rice, beans, and a side salad. At a glance from the menu, this seems to be a generous, balanced meal. And it would be, except none of it delivered any sort of flavor. Not a single bite triggered a "yum". The salad was a pile shredded iceberg topped with a sliver of avacado and a thin ring of red onion. After the first bite, I added some beans to it. After that, I just gave up. The Flautas were actually three over-cooked taquitos with shredded leather... I mean beef... inside. It's a sad indicator when dunking it in sour cream couldn't even help. Again, I gave up. The only part of my order that I enjoyed was the fiesta queso. It was thick and spicy. The chips to accompany it were stale and without a trace of salt. At this point, I was so disappointed in what was supposed to be my meal that I didn't even care. That queso saved me! It's clear to me that the next time I have a craving for Mexican food, I'll be taking that drive across Uptown.

Love this place, great location, efficient service, complimentary chips and salsa( verde and roja) which are fantastic. The burritos, tacos and garanchitas are all delicious. The tortillas are home made in each case. The nacho platter looks good too. Will definitely return. This is a great little spot for decently priced authentic mexican cuisine.

Food Poisoning!! Came here with my fiancé on our first night of vacation in NOLA. This place was located near the AirBnB we stayed at and overall, Yelp reviews looked decent so we decided to stop by. The fiancé had a dish with shrimp and the very next day he started to feel low grade food poisoning symptoms, until they progressively escalated day by day. Doing a deeper dive of Yelp reviews, this isn't the first time someone's had food poisoning from this joint. I will say that the customer service was wonderful, the chips and salsa were especially tasty, and the mojito I had was strong and delicious.

ME: The entomatado sounds interesting, I've never had one. How is it? SERVER: Anh, it's just a tortilla that we cover with some sour cream and cheese. What an uninpressive first un-impression. I settled on the sampler platter and it was a mixed bag as well. The enchilada was pretty darn good slathered in their tasty green sauce. I should have had it with chicken though (instead of the stringy beef) and asked for extra queso fresco - which is delicious. The stuffed jalapeño is also good, but partially because it's deep fat fried. However the rest of my meal was terrible. The tamale is essentially a gritty fat roll of cornmeal with a thin line of pulled pork. The black beans are pasty and lack flavor. The chips are overly fried. EAT AT TAQUERIA GUERRERO for a better more authentic meal.

There is still hope for Mexican Cuisine in New Orleans. The staff here won my heart before I even ordered. I have to give them credit on breaking the standard of what is considered good customer service in this city. They are quick to provide suggestions, they know their food, and can make adjustments if you like it muy caliente! The menu is can sometimes be overwhelming, especially if you don't know what you want or you came in super hungry. Breakfast which is served all day is always a good choice. I like the huevos a la mexicana. Simple, affordable, and with some salsa makes for an amazing meal! Lunch and dinner options are great too! You can always stick to the basics with a taco salad, burrito, taco, or quesadilla but try to venture out and find your flavor! What to keep in mind for those trying this place for the first time. Restaurant flavor caters to locals. In many cases when you go places like Taco Bell, Filipe's, and other chains that don't understand Mexican food, alterations just don't work. Talk to the staff here and ask questions. I'm sure they will work something out to meet your Mexican Cuisine Standards.

Fun and cheap place for Mexican food and drinks. It's semi-authentic food wise, and I LOVE the option for outdoor dining. Mostly due to the proximity to my house, I'll be visiting again in the near future.

Honestly the food was just bad and flavorless. Overpriced for what it was and the burritos didn't even come with what the menu said was in them. service was slow even though they were not busy. Will not be returning.

Excellent, well priced Mexican-Puerto Rico food. We had an excellent waiter, Frank, but he was terminated. Not going to eat there anymore, they fired my favorite waiter!

One of the best and most authentic Mexican restaurants in the city. I went here for lunch with a friend and it was very good. I had the taco plate but that was way to ordinary because they have an extensive menu of little known authentic food that I will definitely be back for. I topped off my meal with Tres Leche Cake and wow was that good. This place is a winner.

Just stopped in for lunch with my best gal! We got the choriqueso (chorizo queso for those of you who are not so clever) and the sampler platter. The choriqueso was very greasy, but very good. It came in the little iron skillet they use to cook it, and it was definitely made to order, which is always a plus. On the sampler platter, we got a beef tostada, a chicken tostada, a chicken stuffed jalapeño, a chicken enchilada, a beef taquito, a chicken tamale, a fried plantain, and rice and beans. I enjoyed tasting all the items, but I did notice they had an interesting and different flavor palette than a normal Mexican dish. And my SO was not a fan of some of the flavors, but still got her fill. I noticed that Panchita's advertises as "Mexican Criolla Cuisine." So I looked up criolla and it's Puerto Rican! So then I looked at the primary flavors/spices and sure enough - tarragon, basil, and bay leaves are big parts of criolla cooking. And that's what we were tasting, and that's what my SO was not a fan of. It's unfair to de-rate Panchita's on its authenticity just because we weren't fans of it. The food was not bad, in fact, I really enjoyed most of it. It was just different - not what I'm used to. And I don't know that I'd choose it over other types of Latin food. So I give them four stars for authenticity, service, atmosphere, and quantity/price. I'd recommend if you're looking for Puerto Rican / Mexican, just don't expect the typical Mexican or Tex-Mex flavors you'd find at most places around the area.

I liked this place, a LOT. The only way they could be a more authentic Mexican restaurant is if they had a chicken running around between the tables. From the decor to the menu selections, and the abundant use of crumbled queso fresca instead of shredded cheddar cheese, this is the real deal, y'all!! It isn't the usual Tex-Mex, or Cali-style burrito joints (that I also love). They even have Mexican Coke in a bottle! As referenced in Jill C.'s review, I ordered the taco salad with grilled beef, no fried bowl. The salad was delicious and fresh (also low-carb and gluten-free) and the beef was VERY flavorful. I will definitely order that again! Another bonus in my book: they serve the breakfast items ALL DAY! I can't wait to go back and try some more of the menu, maybe I'll sit outside and see if that chicken comes around.

Every time I go to a new (and sometimes when I am a repeat customer) Mexican restaurant I get tacos. I think you can always judge a joint based on how they make their tacos. And their tacos were good. Plus it was served as a lunch meal, including rice and beans. I went with a friend so we ordered the fiesta queso as well. If I have one recommendation for any/all people going here...get the fiesta queso. It was so very yummy. Although be careful, because after all that food I was stuffed! The service was also really good. We opted to sit outside and not once did I feel like we were being neglected. Because let me tell you, my water glass was never empty (except when we left). And that is always a win in my book.

This is one of my favorite places to go. Went here once when it was the only place open, and I loved everything I ordered. The owner was there and was very friendly. I've been here many times since, and enjoy everything I order. Highly recommend the Jarochas.

I was in need of comfort food on Friday, and my two categories of comfort food are "Mexican" and "Breakfast." Panchita's has both. I got huevos a la mexicanas, which is eggs scrambled with pico de gallo, plus beans, rice, and corn tortillas. For a vegetarian, the refried beans are the test of every Mexican or Tex-Mex place. The refritos were totally acceptable, and I like that they gave me a little bowl of beans with a same-sized scoop of rice. They also added a little cup of crumbled queso fresco. I get tired of Tex-Mex places glopping rice and beans all over the whole plate, and this was a much nicer way to serve it. The pico de gallo in the eggs tasted fresh and homemade, and the server was on time and helpful and kept our drinks filled. My lunch partner had a taco salad (minus the fried taco shell, which the staff readily agreed to) with steak. It looked like a good fresh big salad, and she said it was really good. The joint is pretty small, the chairs are kind of bulky and weird, and the bathroom is not dirty but not particularly picturesque, and very small. The prices are totally reasonable, and I would definitely return.

Service: Bad- new waitress's asked us over 5x about or combination orders and was pretty stressed out about it Good- I Asked if I could switch out rhe plantain dishes on the combination platter and they were accommodating. Nice little Mexican place just off of Carrollton. They have a wide selection of dishes ranging from simple tamales to carne asada as well as seafood dishes. I had the tamales which were a little underdone to my taste, but still quite good, served in their banana leaf wrapper. In the past I had the tacos which were excellent with corn tortillas and slow cooked meat. The beer is all bottled with a variety of Mexican beers and the local staple of Abita amber. The place was quiet when we got there so we seated ourselves; the waitress was very friendly and did a great job of taking care of our order. In all it's pretty solid Mexican food. It's not the best I've had, but it's cheap and good. We managed two beers and two entrees for about 21 dollars plus tip, not bad at all.

The best authentic Mexican restaurant in town. Good drinks great food, much better than when it first opened , which was good but now it's fantastic.

This is a pretty authentic Mexican restaurant that offers a few things that aren't generally offered at most of the other Mexican and Tex-Mex places in the NOLA area. The margaritas are not that great but the food definitely offers a good value and some very good flavors that are bit more distinctive than most of the other Mexican joints. If you're bored with the typical Mexican restaurant selection this place can introduce you to some new dishes and they have a nice sampler plate to eat alone or share.

A hidden gem. In my opinion, it's the Best Mexican food in New Orleans. It's authentic and the service is always good. From the chips and salsa, to the enchiladas, and the tree leches cake, all I can say is yum! I'm glad this place is very close to my house.

After eating at this place sober... I gotta bump it down a bit I got the same plate.. Tilapia Veracruz. This time, the dish was a little overcooked leaving my fish a bit dry and brown and the plantains a sticky ball with crunchy edges. The enchiladas were not good. The sauce was very plain tomato sauce. The homemade tortillas didnt hold up well to the sauce. I'd probably eat here again, but it wouldnt be my first choice.

Dining at Panchita's is an uplifting and casual affair where you can expect extremely fresh ingredients and house made everything. I tried the queso fiesta w/chips and the Jarocha (I think it was called) that was delicious and filling. Portion size was great and the queso fresco was fantastic. I tried their mango juice and it was thick and sweet, I haven't mango juice like that since I was in Ecuador. If you have traveled in Mexico and enjoyed the food, you will not be disappointed with the national dishes and truly authentic ingredients.

Came here for Cinco de Mayo and had a great experience. I wanted to bring my dog and was thankful that they have an outside patio (sidewalk) seating and they were cool with me having my dog there. The margaritas were really good and strong! I ordered the chicken enchiladas with red sauce. They were delicious, and I could tell that everything was homemade, especially the sauce. The salsa that they served with the chips was also great and authentic. And you know you're getting authentic Mexican food when your enchiladas come with sliced onion and a hard boiled egg on top! YUM!!! To top it all off, the prices were very reasonable and the service was great, even on a very busy night! Great job guys, keep it up. I will be back!

My BFF was in town last weekend,& being a lover of Mexican food, I thought Panchita's would be the place to go. We sat down, took a few minutes for menus to come, & beside one other person in there, we were it as far as customers went. We were in no great rush so it wasn't a big deal at all. We ordered nachos to share- the serving was enormous. It looked delicious & couldn't wait to dig in. Unfortunately, when we did, the nachos were COLD- inedibly COLD. When I called the server over to tell her,she actually ARGUED with me that they were NOT cold. Had it not been for my BFF being really hungry, I would've immediately walked out. But... I stayed, got my "are you freaking kidding me"attitude in check,& after telling her AGAIN that the food was REALLY COLD,she brought it back to the kitchen,& prepared another plate for us.And YES,they were hot & delicious. Will I eat there again? Absolutely!! I'll order something else, tho,coz every restaurant deserves at least 1 more chance. Will I recommend Panchita's to someone? Hmmmmmmm... Probably not- at least not til I give it another try. But as soon as I do(which may be sooner than later coz now I'm hungry for Mexican food !), I'll let y'all know how it was .

Wow I was really surprised to read all the bad reviews about Panchita's! I love this place!! Best Mexican food in New Orleans. After eating here I never want to go back to the other mexi-american restaurants in New Orleans like Felipe's, Nacho Mammas, or Tacqueria Corona, they don't even compare. I think the other people writing these reviews should actually go to Latin America and eat because they obviously have no idea what REAL Mexican food tastes like. Yes the tortilla chips are a bit greasy, and thats because they fry them in house with real tortillas! Also another review said the salsa was watery, well yes it seems watery because it is made in house from real vegetables which mainly consist of water! (Like tomatoes!) They have some of the best salsa verde I have ever had in Louisiana, and you can always guarantee that the salsa was made either that day or the night before! Another review also said the Burrito was the worst they ever had. I would like to say that their burritos are some of the best I have ever had, and no the burritos here taste nothing like the burritos you will get at Felipe's because they are real and authentic and apparently some people don't know what a real burrito tastes like!!! Ok enough venting about other people. Panchita's is some of the best AUTHENTIC Mexican food in New Orleans, if you want highly processed mexi-american food then this is not the place for you! Also I have never had a problem with the service at Panchita's except for maybe a slight lost in translation incident. So when you go to Pnchita's I suggest you try the 3 Tostadas, 3 Roll Fried Tacos, Burritos, and defiantly the salsa verde! They also have great Margaritas and fresh watermelon and pineapple juices that are awesome!

  • Todd S.

Order the tacos. This is a AUTHENTIC mexican place, meaning they speak spanish better than english. The menu is mostly using spanish terms, so feel free to ask what something is (they're happy to explain everything). The tacos, whether beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, fish, i could go on, is what they really excel at. Good beer selection, including Modela Negro, which is my favorite mexican dark beer. The wine list is average, but my wife says the Margaritas are good. Classic meals served with rice and beans on the side, but don't leave that on the table like you usually do - eat them! The rice and beans are really good in their own right. Last, but not least, try the green picante for your chips - it packs a nice whallop!

If you are looking for cheap, greasy, kinda-Mexican food then this is your place. If you are looking for good, tasty real Mexican food keep on walking by. Pros - price is right, they have horchata, good location. Cons - super greasy, the chips were stale and tasted like lard, the horchata tasted chalky. Would I eat there again? If I were severely hungover...maybe.

This place isn't bad, yet not really good either. I come just to order their plantains and tostadas. The meats are marinated perfectly. You do have to be familiar with traditional mexican restaurant menus to really order. I just wish this city would get a place that serves up REAL MEXICAN FOOD. I'm talking like menudo and authentic tortas.

    (3)
  • Lily C.

I walked past this place during Po-Boy fest and decided to come back for dinner. It was delicious! The prices were probably on par with Juan's (but so much better). You can tell that everything is made to order and on site. We had this amazing corn tortilla with bean sauce and vegetables on top. You can tell that they just open since not a lot of people know about it yet. So, give it a shot! I would most certainly return!

  • C.Rose P.

Still on the venture for awesome mexican food... It's not here. You can always tell a good mexican cook by their chille relleno. This pepper was completely flavorless except for the old-oil that saturated the batter. Damn. The beans are alright, the rice boring, and the horchata tasted like fruit juice. I found it odd that Clifford the Big Red Dog was on TV. Perhaps it was to drown out the arguing of the owner and her son sitting on the other side of the restaurant. Making for ackward atmosphere, since the server and I were the only other people in the joint.

  • J. G.

Horchata came in a big Margarita goblet, and the fish torta was one of the best tortas I've had (and I spent 3 months in Oaxaca). Non idea why this place isn't ranked higher. Service was fast and friendly, and they're running a summer special so anything $8-11 on the menu is $7.99 and includes a drink.

  • Anne K.

This place is fantastic. My fiancé and I have only been to Panchita's a few times because we live an hour from NOLA, but we always make a special trip when in the city. While we've never been to Mexico so can't compare them to authentic Mexican food, Panchita's has the best Mexican food of any of the Mexican restaurants we've eaten at from the Midwest to the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic to the Southeast, and beyond. The only place that came close to Panchita's was a Mexican restaurant in southern California. Panchita's food tastes like they've got an old Mexican grandmother cooking up dishes with her time-tested recipes in the back, which is probably not far from the truth. The various kinds of salsa--up to four--provided with the chips are delicious and some of them have actual kick. The soft tacos are excellent and Panchita's offers taco options that are far different than anything you'll get elsewhere, like Al Pastor (shepherd-style pork) and Barbacoa (barbecued beef). We've tried the al pastor, barbacoa, chicken, and carne asada tacos and they were all delicious. If you're really adventurous, you can also try the Chicharron (fried pork rinds) or Lengua (tongue) tacos, but we can't vouch for those. I also had the carne asada quesadillas and they were amazing. Wonderful marinated beef, delicious melted cheese, and perfectly toasted tortilla. We've never had a bad experience at Panchita's. The service has always been quick and friendly, the place was never smoky, and we never had a problem with noise volume, though I'll admit we never went on a weekend night. We would definitely suggest you ignore the bad reviews and try this place if you'd like to taste authentic Mexican food instead of the Tex-Mex that passes for Mexican everywhere else. Just like one reviewer said, if you want a plate of orange rice topped with gobs of cheese and dry chicken, Panchita's is not the place for you. Try one of those chain restaurants instead.

It was just okay. With one exception the shrimp soft taco and the tilapia tacos was good but the tortilla tasted store bought and un flavorful. The chips and salsa were okay, again nothing special....

We visited here on Cinco de Mayo. It was packed, but we quickly got a table. The restaurant was not clean. The service was quick and attentive. I had a chicken quesadilla and my girlfriend had the shrimp tacos. I've had many better quesadillas in New Orleans. The shrimp in the tacos were so small; they looked they came out of a can. The food was mediocre at best. There are much, much better mexican restaurants in New Orleans. Don't waste your time here; you're not missing anything.

i have a mexican friend and he said its as authentic as it gets. we talked to owners and did a survey for them. It definitely feels home cooked meal, simple and delicious. 3 stars coz i hated the Mole sauce here, but one of the must try if you are looking for mexican

Growing up in Texas I'm a snooty Tex Mex grandgousier and Panchita's passes with much muster. Fresh, affordable, and delicious. The waitstaff could pick up the pace, but what are you gonna do? Also, your beverages come in ice cream glasses a la 1982 Farrell's. Deal and enjoy.

  • Anthony C.

Stay away from the quesadilla! I had a shrimp one and it was four tiny shrimp in a sea of microwaved cheese between an uncooked tortilla. My boyfriend had the burrito which was large and tasty (but he'll eat anything). I had the fried tacos which was a pleasant surprise. I didn't care for the queso/cheese dip. It was melted, lumpy cheese in a bowl. I've had much better but I'd go back with friends.

Had been once before and enjoyed it, However... Took a friend to try Authentic Mexican, but never had the chance... Was a friday night granted, but there were several empty tables inside and at least 4 servers that I could count. Btw, the place isn't that big. So, we sat down, one server brought menus and disappeared, then all of them proceeded to walk all around us for 20 minutes or so never acknowledging that we were there... We decided to leave when we glanced over and saw that the couple that had sat down at least 10 minutes after us were enjoying drinks, chips & salsa...

They've just gotten started recently, so you can tell that there are some bumps for them. But they are very friendly and have great service. Their food is "muy autentica y sabroso!" (translation - delicious and authentic). Their style of mexican food is more interior mexico than Tex-Mex. I've had a chicken burrito that was great, and the "Huarache" which was REALLY good and reminded me of eating in Cuernavaca. They have terrific salsa, and the homemade tortilla chips & salsa (free!) will have you raving as soon as you sit down.

Got three tacos--two steak, one carne asada. Bland flour tortillas, skimpy on the meat, and even skimpier on the cilantro and onions. In short, you'll be disappointed if you're from somewhere with a large Mexican population. Most of the crappy taquerias in Chicago or CA would run circles around this joint at half the price. Curt service to boot. Props to them for gratis chips and salsa. Boo for no free refills on soda fountain drinks.

Wow! Definitely tops the short list of good Latin American food in New Orleans. I had the mole the first night, had to come bak within 24 hours for another go and chose the chilequiles with steak and eggs. Both choices were equally as delicious. Great ambiance, prices and food!

  • Dustin F.

Erm uhh well, the food was no good at all, BUT they did give us a partial refund because we were so disgusted so I guess they get credit for that. The restaurant is smokey, small, and loud. The food is strange, tastes funny, and looks like it was cooked by ALF. If you aren't sure what that means, don't worry it's just as confusing as the dishes which were presented to us as foodstuffs. The only positive (aside from the partial refund) is the fact they have Don Julio tequila.

A late addition to the recent boost that Mexican food has gotten in the city post-Katrina, Panchita's offers some very good authentic Mexican food that you won't find at many of the others in town. It's the first place in town I've found that serves chilaquiles, a traditional breakfast I fell in love with in Mexico and was thrilled to see on the menu on our first visit. The other must-try is the chicken mole burrito. It's not for everyone, as my own wife is not a fan of mole, but the mole burrito is an excellent take on the dish. The house-made aguas-frescas are fantastic and fairly generously served up in a large glass goblet. Just make sure you stir it a bit because that cane sugar tends to settle at the bottom.

Panchita's could be the best Mexican food restaurant in New Orleans. Their burritos are loaded full of deliciousness, including gaucamole and sour cream for no extra charge. Their table side salsa is killer. The space may be a little on the cozy side, but the welcoming service makes up for it.

We did not care for this place at all. The margarita was way too sweet. It tasted like a green Fla-Vor-Ice. The salsa was obviously seasoned with MSG, as was everything else we tried.

    (1)
  • Adam G.

I've been here a few times since it opened to try the different menu items and it really is a mixed bag. The enchiladas were good, but had a type of sauce with which I'm not familiar. The burrito was no Felipe's, but still had a lot of flavor. The wait isn't long for most of the food, and I have a beer while I wait, anyway. One thing of note: on a Friday during lent I stopped in to get a cheese quesadilla (meatless quesadillas are not on the menu) and they charged the same price as one with chicken (6.50) and it was only a half of a quesadilla. Also, it didn't seem to be fried, rather it was a tortilla with some cheese that they stuck in the microwave. If you stay away from that, you should be fine.

  • Martin T.

I had fish tacos and shrimp fajitas. The seafood and vegetables tasted fresh, not drenched in grease or cheese. Cooked and seasoned perfectly and the different types of salsa is just fun. If they did have startup problems, they are rolling now. I was not impressed with the margaritas but the food was great in a city where I have been frequently disappointed by Mexican restaurants.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
